I believe it is from May of 1933 and that it is his 78th (not 87th) birthday, but someone may want to check my math. CHOCTAW PIONEER AT NINETY LIVING AMONG HER MEMORIES by Paris News Correspondent. HUGO, Okla. - It is thankfulness for good health, friends and a good home, as well as memories of much happiness that Mrs. Sophia Ann Fodge, Choctaw County pioneer, treasured on her 90th birthday here Thursday.. Among the numerous cards and gifts which she received was one which read, "May He lead you ever forward in his own mysterious way" and she declared "If it's the Lord's will, I'm ready to live to be 100!". "Granny" as she is familiarily known, was born on Dec. 4, 1857, in Carroll County, Tenn. and came to India(n) Territory 4 years ao with her late husband, James Fodge. After living in Cass County, texas for a time, the couple moved to Fort Towson, where Fodge farmed until he retired because of ill health. He died in 1937.. She kept house for an invalid son, Marvin, until his death five year(s) ago and she came to Hugo seven months to make her home with Mrs. V. B. Toile, a practical nurse at 411 S. 4th St. Only recently have her eyesight and hearing begun to fail.. Though the day was marred by the news of the death Wednesday of a brother, John Reynolds, Detroit, Texas, the last immediate member of her family, Mrs. Fodge was up early as usual. Dressed in a neat black dress and a gay-colored smock, she was ready to greet friends, many of whom came from Fort Towson to offer birthday greetings.. Mrs. Fodge is the sole survivor of a family of eight children, of whom she was the eldest.. As Mrs. Toile made preparations for an informal birthday party, augmented by a cake sent in by a neighbor, 90-year old Sophie Ann Fodge discussed with friends the world in which she has lived for so ong.. Conditions have improved a lot since she came to what was a wilderness back at the turn of the century. "Wickedness is not as bad now, there is more law and order, and young folks as a whole have improved." she says. Her only worry these days is about "all the trouble across the waters.". This was posted to the Eitel-Franks Family Website on June 6, 2009 by Sophia's great granddaughter, Janice Laman. Janice writes: This is a newspaper article that was in Grandma Daisy's things. It must have been published shortly after Dec. 4, 1947. We'v faced another turn of the century and still have the same worry about trouble across the waters. She died Feb. 14, 1949.

Generation: 4

  1. 12.  John Harrison Reynolds was born in 1807 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, United States of America (son of Thomas Reynolds and Judith McGee); died on 15 Sep 1875 in Van Buren, Arkansas, United States; was buried in Scotland, Van Buren County, Arkansas, United States of America.

    Notes:

According to Stella Baker (dbaker@tcworks.net) John Reynolds had three sons, James, William and Benjamin and a daughter that everyone called Sis. She married James Neal. They must of all lived in Van Buren or Conway Co, Arkansas. William Halbrook and several families came to Arkansas sometime after 1845. William and Judith lived near Coon Creek in Perry County, Tennessee before coming to Arkansas. On 1880 Census Benjamin lists his parents as being born in Tennessee, but on his death certificate it states both were born in North Carolina.

John married Jane Ray Lampkins on 17 Oct 1828 in Wilson, Tennessee, USA. Jane was born on 6 Feb 1816 in Bedford, Tennessee, USA; died on 22 Dec 1895 in Scotland, VanBuren, Arkansas; was buried in Scotland, Van Buren County, Arkansas, United States of America. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

The death certificate of Benjamin Franklin Reynold states that his mother's name was Jane Lampkins born in North Carolina. Other family records state that her name was Jane L. Ray, or Jane Barrett. At this point i'm not sure as to what her correct maiden name was. Perhaps it was Lampkins, and she married a Ray before she married John Reynolds? Perhaps someone has linked the incorrect Jane with John Reynolds? Perhaps the death certificate was wrong? Can't be sure, but I will continue to investigate this.-- RL Obit: Provided to me by Kristen plaino4@aol.com REYNOLDS- Mrs. Jane L.,nee Ray Was born February 6, 1816 in Bedford County Tenn., and departed this life December 22, 1895 at her son's home at Scotland Ark. This aged mother had been a faithful member of the M.E. Church, South, for more than sixty years, and she has now gone to reap her reward. She was the mother of eleven children eight of whom preceed her to the world beyond; three sons are still battling for the Lord, one in Arkansas and two in Texas. may the Lord bless them with all the relatives and friends and may they imitate their mother's godly example till they meet her in the skies. Sister Reynolds was a very patient sufferer being five years an invalid from paralysis, she suffered very much, yet without murmuring. Praise the Lord for a Christian mother. C.H.
