    Notes:

This letter is five pages written in pencil on small lined tablet paper. Sent back home to his wife, Cora and children left behind in Oklahoma, from Clarence Eitel in Washington state. A sign of the times during the Great Depression. . Kelso, Sept 6 1934 Wash.. Dear Wife and Children.. Will drop you a few lines this morning everybody is o.k. and hope you all the same. We landed here Saturday about 10 o'clock had good luck on the road didn't have any trouble at all only had one flat. These people seem to be awful fine. Folks we only had about $4.50 when we got here Mr Mcnabb says we will eat don't worry so that is the main part until we get a job. He said we could get a job before long and that they don't pay less than 03.60 a day at any work. I like here fine so far. Mc says you can buy spuds for 50 ct per hundred lb cabbage 50 ct apples 25 pears 25 just 10 miles from here. We went to town yesterday. Those large white grapes that you pay 25 ct a pound there for is 2 lbs for 15 ct here. lettuce 3 large heads 10 ct apples in the store as good as any you can buy in Carnegie for 40 ct tomatoes is about the same 5 ct meat 20 to 30 everything else is about 1/3 cheaper in the store. The best flour that can be bought here is $1.65 so you see anyone can live here cheaper than there.. Cora you all be careful get by as cheap as you can so you all can get out here as soon as possible don't worry about getting here because if nothing hapens we will get you all here before the last of the year that seems a long time off but if we go over across the mt and pick apples it wont be so d _ _ n long. Mcnabb says the girls can get a job at $3.50 a day for 8 hours easer than we can.. McNabb his wife 14 yr old boy made $145.00 in 4 weeks last fall afore there living so you see we can live out here as well as anywhere it doesnt cost anything to send the kids to school no even clothes if you are not able to buy them the state will buy them. Cora tell Omega and Dick not to make anyother arrangement but to come out here for they cant help but like here and can make money easyer than there and if they dont like be no trouble to get away but I know they will like tell Dick and Doyle it is only 15 miles to where we can see all the Bear deer elk you want to and fish right here at us. Just worlds of them.. Well I will close for this time Cora it is all a joke about it being cold here McNabb told me that he didnt even drain his car all last winter didnt even freeze any ice here at all altho he said it would be disagrable in winter on acount of mist but not to cold at that will tell you more when I see you. tell the kids hello and kiss them for me tell W.L. not to forget dady. Notes:

This is the touching poem written by Cora's dear friend and neighbor, Mrs. Alfrey, in memory of her friend right after she died. This is just as she wrote it:. To the Mother, Sisters, Daughters of Cora Spruill, IN MEMORY OF CORA SPRUILL, To Her Loveing Family. ~GONE FISHING~. I went to see my nabour. Couldn't find her around. The place was very lonely and the dogie was in teers. Then her mother said (she's gone fishing). I walked along the Alley and she was diging worms. I asked what she doing and this is what I learned. (I'm going fishing). When Gabriel blows his horn, and I don't see her around, I'll just look up in the sky and say (my nabour's gone fishing). Sincerely your Nabour Alfrey. This poem was a lovely tribute to Cora from her friend who was inspired by Cora's love of fishing. The original is in Cora's bible. It was posted to the Eitel-Franks family Website, by her granddaughter S. Shaw, on March 21, 2009. Cora's family placed the words "GONE FISHIN'" on her tombstone when her young granddaughter, Susan, stood in her yard after she had died and said, "She's gone fishing.".

    Notes:

Many years ago, possibly the 1970's, this charming remembrance was memeographed and handed out to family members at a family get-together. There is no date on this paper of when it actually took place. This is an excerpt pertaining to the above. Many thanks to Norene for taking the time to pass this wonderful information down to her family. This was written by: June Stokes, great-granddaughter of the Rev. Isaac Newton Franks.. "The following historical information was given to June Stokes, of Fort Towson, by her Aunt Norene (Davidson) Hunt. Mrs. Norene Hunt is Rev. Franks' granddaughter. June called her aunt for information concerning Ouida Roberts research on the early history of the Fort Towson First Baptist Church. She is compiling this into book form on the early history and organization of the church.. Norene Davidson Hunt resides in a nursing home in Ardmore. She is a retired teacher, who was born and raised in this county. Mrs. Hunt first taught school at Sunkist, near Boswell, then at the Sulphur State School for the Deaf when she retired. Mrs. Hunt was given this information from her mother, Abbie Nora Davidson, Rev. Isaac Franks' daughter.. Isaac and Elizabeth Franks' son Charlie married Daisy Fodge, whose mother was Granny Fodge. June Bokies Stokes remebers for years thinking Granny Fodge to be her own grandmother. After their mother's death in April of 1928, June and Joe just being seven days old, were taken to live with their grandmother, Abbie Davidson. Abbie Davidson being 55 years old knew she needed help with the twins, so while daughter Norene was away at school, Granny Fodge being "a specially good" life-long friend helped out with the rocking chair. They rocked us a million miles, Joe being Granny's favorite, they saved our lives and we made it with their love and those old rocking chairs. . Daisy Fodge was also the sister of Marvin Fodge who was the father of Frank Fodge, all of Ft. Towson. Frank Fodge now lives in Antlers, OK. Daisy and Charlie Franks had thirteen children, of which there were two sets of twins. One of the girls, from one set of twins named Nora, married a fellow by the name of Horace Eudy. (*the story of the Eudy's by Norene is posted on Horace Eudy's page and some of his descendants).. From the thirteen children born to Charlie and Daisy Franks eleven lived. Charlie Franks passed away years ago in Oklahoma City. Charlie and Daisy were laid to rest in a small cemetary in western Oklahoma where they made their home. (* Correction - Daisy is buried in Orland, California).. This story again has been passed on by Norene Davidson Hunt, who resides in a nursing home in Ardmore, Ok. She is the daughter of Abbie Franks Davidson and the granddaughter of Rev. Isaac Newton Franks. This was told to her by her mother and then passed down to her neice, June Stokes, who lives in Ft. Towson now.. This you could say is some of the earliest history of a "Circuit riding" minister who served the Ft. Towson Baptist Church in its earlier years, about 1902. (* please see Isaac Newton Franks) Told in full detail it involves the lives of a lot of old-timers in the past, history of its time and in this area in and around Ft. Towson." .

CHOCTAW PIONEER AT NINETY LIVING AMONG HER MEMORIES by Paris News Correspondent. HUGO, Okla. - It is thankfulness for good health, friends and a good home, as well as memories of much happiness that Mrs. Sophia Ann Fodge, Choctaw County pioneer, treasured on her 90th birthday here Thursday.. Among the numerous cards and gifts which she received was one which read, "May He lead you ever forward in his own mysterious way" and she declared "If it's the Lord's will, I'm ready to live to be 100!". "Granny" as she is familiarily known, was born on Dec. 4, 1857, in Carroll County, Tenn. and came to India(n) Territory 4 years ao with her late husband, James Fodge. After living in Cass County, texas for a time, the couple moved to Fort Towson, where Fodge farmed until he retired because of ill health. He died in 1937.. She kept house for an invalid son, Marvin, until his death five year(s) ago and she came to Hugo seven months to make her home with Mrs. V. B. Toile, a practical nurse at 411 S. 4th St. Only recently have her eyesight and hearing begun to fail.. Though the day was marred by the news of the death Wednesday of a brother, John Reynolds, Detroit, Texas, the last immediate member of her family, Mrs. Fodge was up early as usual. Dressed in a neat black dress and a gay-colored smock, she was ready to greet friends, many of whom came from Fort Towson to offer birthday greetings.. Mrs. Fodge is the sole survivor of a family of eight children, of whom she was the eldest.. As Mrs. Toile made preparations for an informal birthday party, augmented by a cake sent in by a neighbor, 90-year old Sophie Ann Fodge discussed with friends the world in which she has lived for so ong.. Conditions have improved a lot since she came to what was a wilderness back at the turn of the century. "Wickedness is not as bad now, there is more law and order, and young folks as a whole have improved." she says. Her only worry these days is about "all the trouble across the waters.". This was posted to the Eitel-Franks Family Website on June 6, 2009 by Sophia's great granddaughter, Janice Laman. Janice writes: This is a newspaper article that was in Grandma Daisy's things. It must have been published shortly after Dec. 4, 1947. We'v faced another turn of the century and still have the same worry about trouble across the waters. She died Feb. 14, 1949.
